Portsmouth returns to EFL Trophy action against Crystal Palace’s under-21s at Fratton Park this evening. Head coach Danny Cowley is set to rotate his squad heavily because they set to exit the competition after defeats to AFC Wimbledon and Sutton United in their opening two group stage matches in this season’s competition. Also, on the injury list are Paul Downing, Liam Vincent, Ryan Tunnicliffe, Ellis Harrison, Clark Robertson, and Jayden Reid. Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu (Republic of Ireland) and midfielder Joe Morrell (Wales) also both miss out on the trophy clash as they are both on international duty with their respective countries. A number of academy players are likely to be included. Crystal Palace U21 can progress to the round of 16 knock-out stage with victory over Portsmouth. They currently sit third in their group, level on points with AFC Wimbledon but with a goal difference of -1 less. To make the next stage, Palace will need to better the Dons’ score against Sutton United. Should Wimbledon win, the Eagles will need to win by a margin large enough to better their goal difference. Expect an offensive formation from Crystal Palace U21 and scoring at least two goals in the Portsmouth net.
