Recap

Benfica finished in 3rd place in the Portuguese Championship (season 2021/22), and started from the third qualifying round, overcoming Midtjylland with two wins (4:1 home, 1:3 away). In the playoffs, Benfica took two wins against Dynamo Kyiv (0:2 on Polish neutral ground and 3:0 in Lisbon) and won the ticket to the group stage of the Champions League. They makes a fresh start with Roger Schmidt at the bench and are in amazing form, counting 9 wins in as many official races. Benfica have not won a title in the last three years, and the main goal is to be back on the throne in Portugal. Benfica are without the injured key defender Morato (4/1) and have been quick to plug the „hole” in the center of defense by signing American John Brooks, who had been released from Wolfsburg. Maccabi Haifa marked the Champions League qualifications, after demolishing Olympiakos 0:4 in Athens, and eliminating Red Star Belgrade. Last season, Maccabi played in the group stage of the Conference League, and this season, they achieved their goal to enter in the Champions league group stage. The Israelis have several excellent players, they were dominant in the last season marked by the fantastic Omer Atzili. The right winger of the club from Haifa scored 28 goals and provided 14 assists in all competitions, and was also the top scorer of the championship. This summer, they signed quality players like Guingamp forward Frantzdy Pierrot, and former ace Nikita Rukavytsya. Also, the defensive line is straightened with Swedish right back Daniel Sandgren, who spent last season in Greece’s Aris. However, although this team is made up of quality footballers, among whom is the reliable Serbian stopper Bogdan Planić, while the main asset of the team, and of the entire club, is the excellent coach Barak Bahar. His game system and football philosophy marked the last few years of Israeli football. Benfica is better and more experienced, but the defensive line in the last two games (Pacos Ferreira, Vizela), brings a lot of worries for coach Roger Schmidt. Maccabi Haifa is really dangerous in transition and counter-attacks, and I think that can score at least a goal in an open match.
